How to compost

Composting is an important way we try to reduce waste! The basics are simple.

Compost buckets

A small compost bucket is mounted on the side of the wooden counter, and you can open it by pulling up and on the tab. It will open away from the counter so that you can wipe food scraps into it. Extra small liners are available in the bottom kitchen drawer near the dishwasher.

The large green compost bin is in the basement near Alvin, close to the wall, to make it easy to clean his litterbox daily. Alvin’s hay and poops go in the compost bucket. Extra large bin liners are available in the bottom kitchen drawer near the dishwasher.

What’s allowed:

  • All food can go in compost - even meat, bones, dairy, pits and seeds, peelings and scraps, and leftovers or takeout
  • All plants can go in compost, such as flowers or leaves
  • Any waste from an herbivore can go in compost - this includes Alvin’s hay and poops
  • Artizan Nespresso pods, compostable plastic wrap, and compostable baggies can go in compost

Things that can’t go in compost:

  • Produce stickers - these are easy to miss accidentally! Please throw away.
  • Dog, cat, human, and non-herbivore waste - this includes things like paper towels or napkins to clean pet messes, please throw in trash
  • Paper takeout boxes, pizza boxes, cartons, etc - these have hidden plastics that cannot be composted, please recycle or throw away
