Making Coffee from Scratch

Grinding the beans.

There are three containers next to the toaster oven. The large one contains a medium-dark roast. The smaller, yellow one contains a flavored coffee, with the flavor displayed on the front. The smallest one contains decaf. All three of these are whole bean coffee. That's where the grinder comes in.

Next to the canisters is an electric grinder. The hopper (clear top area) can be turned to the desired coarseness. For example, I set it to 12 for the Chemex pourover carafe.

Brewing

In the left side cabinet above the stove, the various coffee brewing devices are available. The Chemex is the glass carafe, pictured below. There is a metal cone shaped filter that goes into the Chemex. Also, the white conical container is used to hold the used filter and grounds while they cool before composting. This is the method we use the most for coffee, but there is also a Moka pot, which uses a finer, approximately 8, grind. And a French press, which is the least used device.

All of these coffee brewing containers are hand wash only.
